An Apple Pencil that will not connect is not necessarily broken. First identify both the Pencil version and the exact iPad model. A pairing method that works for a different combination may not apply to your devices.
Confirm compatibility before repeating setup
Apple advises checking model compatibility, updating iPad software and making sure the Pencil is charged. The first-generation Pencil can need a specific adapter for some USB-C iPads. Magnetic attachment alone is not a universal pairing method across every Pencil version.
Follow the matching instructions in Apple's pairing troubleshooting guide and consult the Pencil compatibility list. Apple also describes restarting the iPad, checking Bluetooth and forgetting an existing Pencil pairing before trying again. Use the sequence that matches your model.
Pairing and writing are different problems
If the Pencil appears connected but will not write, describe that separately from a Pencil that never pairs. Note whether the problem affects every app or only one. A useful enquiry distinguishes charging, connection and input behaviour instead of treating all three as the same fault.
What to bring or send
- The Pencil version and iPad model name.
- The relevant charging cable or adapter.
- Whether a battery level or pairing prompt appears.
- Whether this combination previously worked.
- Any visible damage or recent change of iPad, case or accessory.
Keep account passwords out of your message. Screenshots of an error can help, but crop private notifications and account information before sharing.
When an assessment makes sense
If the combination is compatible and the correct setup steps still fail, ask for an assessment rather than purchasing parts on a guess. Confirm whether the charge is for testing, repair or replacement. Some internal faults may not have a practical repair path.
Our Apple Pencil service page provides a starting point for checking availability. Supply both model names so the team can ask the right questions and explain the available options before you visit.
