One AirPod Not Working: How to Narrow Down the Problem

Check whether a silent AirPod is charging, distinguish silence from low volume and prepare a useful repair enquiry.

When one AirPod stops playing, first decide whether it is completely silent or simply quieter than the other. These are different symptoms. Record which side is affected, then check the charging status before assuming the speaker has failed.

Start with charging and a simple audio test

Apple's guidance starts with a charged case, both AirPods placed inside for 30 seconds, and a check on the connected iPhone or iPad that each earbud is charging. Test the affected earbud separately using Apple's sequence. If one side remains silent, follow the reset instructions for your exact model.

For unequal volume, Apple recommends checking the speaker mesh and the left/right balance setting. Use the cleaning instructions for your model rather than inserting tools or applying an improvised liquid cleaner. The official left-or-right AirPod guide links to the appropriate checks.

Separate the symptoms in your notes

“It does not work” might mean an earbud does not charge, does not appear on the device, disconnects repeatedly or plays quietly. Try the same audio source when comparing sides so your notes are consistent. Avoid making several settings changes at once; otherwise it becomes difficult to tell what helped.

Bring the complete set for assessment

Include both earbuds and the charging case, even if only one side seems faulty. Tell the technician the generation, which side is affected and the outcome of the charging checks. If you already replaced one earbud or the case, mention that too.

Repair and replacement questions

Ask what the proposed work addresses and whether the quoted price is for an earbud, case or another service. Confirm model compatibility before buying a replacement component. Internal repair is not practical for every fault, so request an explanation of the available options rather than a guaranteed repair promise.

Before approving work, ask about charges if no repair is possible, any warranty on the supplied component and the expected completion time. Our AirPods assessment page explains how to start a model-specific enquiry.
